Are you experiencing intermittent leg pain or cramps during routine movement, walking or climbing up stairs? This could be a symptom of peripheral artery disease, and one of the most common signs of PAD.

PAD can be treated if diagnosed early and properly. Aside from the warning signs, there are some demographic factors that might incite the need to schedule an appointment at Vascular Intervenion Specialists, or with your primary care doctor.

Are you at risk for PAD?

Risk factors are anything that may increase a person’s chance of developing a disease—including but not limited to: stress, activity, diet, family history or lifestyle choices. The inherent risk factors for PAD include some pre-existing conditions and demographic factors, including:
  • Male (over 50)
  • Postmenopausal Females (over 50)
  • Hypertension or Type 2 Diabetes
  • Family history of heart disease, high cholesterol or high blood pressure
If the aforementioned risk factors do not apply, you should also take into consideration any of these treatable conditions and contributors to PAD:
  • Smoking or the use of tobacco products
  • Coronary artery disease
  • High blood sugar
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Lack of exercise or physical activity
Those who smoke or have diabetes have the highest risk of complications from PVD because these risk factors also cause impaired blood flow.
